I always enjoy this time of year as I begin to reminiscence of times when my Dad took my brother and me to the local apple orchids in Washington to pick apples. I recall filling buckets full of fresh apples of all shapes and sizes. If you ever get the opportunity to pick apples or any in season fruit do it! It's a fun experience.
By far I could say that the gala apple was the best tasting, although now-a-days I have come love the honeycrisp apple thanks to my sweet friend Annie. I never realized there were so many varieties of apples. Below is a chart of apple harvesting months for Washington's apples. Find a harvesting chart for your area and look at local farmers markets for delicious apples available to you.
I recently was given a bag full of fresh apples, knowing I need to hurry and eat them or can them I decided what better way to kick off the fall season than to make a dutch apple pie. It of course turned out amazing. As like most of the things we bake at home I used our Traeger Grill bake our pie.
My Dutch Apple Pie Recipe
Ingredients
Pie
1 deep dish pie crust
8 apples cored, peeled and sliced thin
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup light brown sugar
3 tablespoons all purpose flour
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Topping
1/2 cup salted butter
1 cup all purpose flour
2/3 cup light brown sugar
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Optional about 1/4 cup finely chopped walnuts
1. press dough into pie dish
* Never forget to crimp or pinch the edges just like my grandma used to do.
2. Mix together in a large bowl sliced apples, sugar, brown sugar, flour, lemon juice and cinnamon until apples look evenly coated.
3. Scoop apples into the pie crust ensuring they spread out evenly.
4. Use a pastry cutter or food processor to combine butter, flour, and ground nutmeg. When all of those are combine they should look like small pebbles. Sprinkle the topping on evenly.
5. Bake at 400F for 45 minutes give or take depending on your grill or stove. I place mine on a cookie sheet.
*When using the Traeger you need to place the pie on the upper rack or I sometimes just use an old stove grate to raise the pie up to ensure it doesn't burn the crust. I set my timer to 25 minutes when baking on the Traeger to make sure the grill temperature doesn't exceed 400F. Adjust as necessary.
I would love to hear some more fun things to do with apples as all I see left to do with mine is can them for future pies.
